THEY LOOKED UNBEATABLE AND THEY WERE ... NO STAKES SURPRISES AT HASTINGS
Vancouver, B.C. (Aug. 26/08) – A couple of former stakes winners at Hastings Racecourse weren’t to be denied in the weekend features.
El Sinaloense, the sensational 2-year-old gelding, won the $50,000 New Westminster Sunday by a stunning five-and-a-half lengths. Trained and owned by Juan Olmos, El Sinaloense won for a fourth consecutive time, all with Pedro Alvarado in the saddle. It was a combination that also won the Ladnesian Stakes earlier this year.
“I knew the race was over at the half-mile mark,” Alvarado said after finishing the 6 ½ furlong test in 1:17.37. El Sinaloense broke sharply and led throughout to pay $2.30 and $2.10. There was no show betting but a couple of longshots – Dream Prospect and Diamond Quest – resulted in a $135.80 triactor.
What R the Odds didn’t disappoint her trainer Mel Snow in Saturday’s $50,000 Lassie. With Fernando Perez up, the 2-year-old filly led throughout and won driving in a final time of 1:17.09. What R the Odds won the Timber Music Stakes on July 12.
There are four stakes races on next weekend’s Labour Day Holiday card: a doubleheader Saturday with the Hong Kong Jockey Club and PNE President’s Speed; the Richmond Derby Trial on Sunday and the Randall Plate on Monday featuring Spaghetti Mouse.
