MONASHEE & SPAGHETTI MOUSE LEAVE A HOLIDAY CROWD BUZZING

Jockey Dave Wilson did both the expected and unexpected during a whirlwind holiday weekend of thoroughbred racing at Hastings Racecourse.

Wilson’s remarkable 13 3/4-length victory on Monashee Monday was clearly no surprise in the feature race of the day: the $50,000 Senate Appointee Handicap. Monashee, the 2005 Horse of the Year at Hastings, paid just $2.30 to win in what was described later as perhaps her most impressive performance of an already illustrious career. Trained by Tracy McCarthy, Monashee completed the 1 1/16th miles in 1:44 and earned $30,000 for her fourth stakes win, including the Strawberry Morn Stakes on June 10.

Wilson dazzled racing fans on Saturday - Canada Day - as well, but this time in a much more startling manner when he rode Spaghetti Mouse to an upset victory in the $133,340 Lt. Governors Handicap. Winner of the 2005 B.C. Derby with Wilson in the irons, Spaghetti Mouse caught heavily-favoured Quiet Cash in the stretch Saturday and won by a half-length, paying $37.50. Spaghetti Mouse is trained by Gary Demorest, who said in the winner’s circle: “You could see ‘The Mouse’ likes the distance because he had so much run in him at the end. Today was his day!”

Friday Night at the Races and the popular Money Machine return to Hastings Racecourse this Friday, July 7 at 6:55 p.m. Fans will have a chance to win up to $1,000 in betting vouchers on Fridays that include July 7, 14, 21, 28; August 11, 18 and 25.

Victoria’s celebrated blues singer Layla launches the entertainment-filled Friday night schedule this week. Each and every Friday there will be a fabulous give-a-way: a Toshiba 26’ widescreen flat tube television.
