STRAWBERRY MORN WAS THE PICK OF THE CROP IN HASTINGS FEATURE STAKES RACE SEASON
Vancouver, B.C. (June 14/08) -- The leading connections of jockey Mario Gutierrez, trainer Troy Taylor and owners Glen Todd and Patrick Kinsella continued their dominance at Hastings Racecourse Sunday with a victory in the $50,000 Strawberry Morn Stakes.
Lady Raj rallied from three wide into the final turn of the 1 1/16 miles test to finish a raging 7 1/12 lengths in front of runner Wind Storm in a final time of 1:45.64. It was the sixth win of the day for ‘Marvelous Mario’, who now has an incredible 40 victories after only 16 racing dates at Hastings.
Facing the favoured Alpine Garden who had won the BC Oaks in her final start of the 2007 season, Lady Raj gained the lead at mid-stretch and was never challenged.
Lady Raj paid $6.80, $3.40 and $2.60 and combined with a second-place finish by longshot Wind Storm, the exactor paid $78.30.
At a special Father’s Day celebration, 10 golfers had a chance at winning $119,000 in a hole-in-one contest but none of the contestants managed to hit the green that was 160 yards away.
Racing resumes at Hastings Saturday and Sunday with back-to-back CTHS Sales stakes.
