CANADIAN HORSE RACING HALL OF FAME WELCOMES THE BENNETTS & CHRIS LOSETH
Vancouver, B.C. (May 23/07) -- Russ and Lois Bennett, breeders of more than 50 stakes winners, and jockey Chris Loseth are among this year’s inductees into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame.
“We’re absolutely thrilled,” Lois said from the Bennett’s famous Flying Horse Farm in Kelowna. “Breeding horses has been our passion for so many years and it’s wonderful to be recognized for something you love to do, especially when that recognition comes from your peers.”
Mr. & Mrs. R.J. Bennett have been British Columbia’s leading breeders for 20 of the past 21 years and won a Sovereign Award in l983, the year their homebred Travelling Victor was named Canada’s Horse of the Year.
“Breeding and raising horses is a lot of hard work and we’ve been at it for more than 50 years,” Russ says. “The big fun is at the race track where you live your dream. We are both very appreciative of the Hall of Fame recognition.”
Some of Loseth’s major wins came on Travelling Victor. Loseth won Sovereign Awards as Canada’s outstanding apprentice in 1976 and top jockey in l984. He retired in June of 2005 with a career total of 3,665 victories and over $32 million in winning purses.
“It still hasn’t sunk in,” says Loseth, who once rode a record eight winners one afternoon at Hastings. “Being named to the Canadian Hall of Fame is the perfect topping on my career.”
Induction ceremonies will be held on Thursday, Aug. 23 at the Mississauga Convention Centre. The Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame is located at Woodbine Racetrack. Established in l976, the Hall of Fame honours those who’ve made a significant contribution to the sport of horse racing in Canada.
