FRANK FUENTES WINS BOTH ENDS
OF CTHS STAKES DOUBLEHEADER

October 1, 2013

Vancouver, B.C. (September 29/13) – Veteran jockey Frank Fuentes showed he still has a flare for the dramatic by winning both CTHS Sales stakes races in photo finishes over a sloppy track Sunday afternoon at Hastings Racecourse.

The first came in the $50,000 CTHS Sales Stakes for 3-year-old fillies with favoured Kiri’s Girl outlasting Le Facteur Wow and winning by a neck for leading trainer Craig MacPherson.  But Fuentes wasn’t done thrilling the loyal racing fans who, like the jockeys and horses, braved a rainy and windy Sunday.

A neck?  How about a nose!  That was the margin of victory for Fuentes and long shot Stepupforthemoney in the $50,000 CTHS Sales Stakes for 3-year-old colts and geldings. Stepupforthemoney did just that, stepping up and paying an eye-popping $53.50 after catching heavily-favoured Hopeseeker in the final jump at the wire. The handsome payoff resulted in a $2,175.80 triactor (8-7-4) with the longest shot on the board – Stoneridge Raider (70-1) – rallying in the late stages to finish third. Stepupforthemoney is trained by Pat Jarvis.

With just five live racing days remaining on the 2013 Hastings schedule, Amadeo Perez continues to lead the jockey standings with 56 victories after hitting the winner’s circle twice Sunday. Runner-up Scott Williams (51) was skunked on the weekend but Antonio Reyes won three on Saturday and one Sunday to move into a third-place tie with Fuentes at 48.
